GENERAL INFORMATION

The Scholastic Technology Service Group is responsible for overseeing the continuous development, improvement and operation of e-Commerce, Enterprise applications, Internet and Intranet applications. Currently, these systems support multi million page views a day on the internet, and millions of e-commerce and non commerce transactions per year.



The Scholastic Technology Service online environment consists of P690s running AIX, Websphere Application Server, Websphere Commerce Server, and DB2. There is a storage area network (SAN) based on IBM’s Shark and McData’s fabric switch. The Windows environment is based on Intel servers and there is a legacy of Sun/Solaris, Oracle and ATG applications. Networking and security are based on Cisco products. The Application Development team is responsible for coding and integrating various applications running on the diverse web sites and partners with the Project Management Office on approved scheduled projects. The team is generally responsible for:

• e-Commerce application development employing J2EE and Microsoft standards

• Integrating vendor packages

• Database modeling and scripting

• System documentation

• Production defect repair and enhancements



POSITION OBJECTIVES

The Director of e-Commerce Application Development will assume responsibility for the application development of a variety of websites and will provide leadership and vision for the development team and its related business priorities.



KEY RELATIONSHIPS

The Director will develop working relationships with various teams within the Technology Service Group and other divisions of Scholastic. These include:

• All members of the Scholastic Technology Service Applications Development team.

• Members of the Scholastic Technology Service Network Operations team.

• Members of the PMO team (e.g. Project Managers).

• Business units, backend systems, customer service teams, production support teams, external vendors and consultants.



RESPONSBILITIES AND REQUIREMENTS

• Build and lead a team of top notch managers as well as Websphere Commerce and J2EE developers.

• Working closely with the business, build relationships and enable business flexibility through technology. Through regular interaction, assess business needs, strategize and delivery quality products on time and on budget.

• Manage the development of project budgets, ROI, technology vision, and oversee resource scheduling and management to ensure on time and on budget project delivery.

• Manage various websites including maintenance and new development. Develop and oversee technical design and architecture approaches.

• Work through bottlenecks, provide escalation management, balance business needs with technical constraints.

• Manage vendor relationships:

o Set clear, common understanding of scope of deliverables and related timelines.

o Establish processes for interactions between vendor team and Scholastic team.

o Work through any process and/or quality issues.

o Collaborate and negotiate with vendors on any new Statements of Work and/or Agreements.

• Interact with Finance to track detailed project financials against budget.

• Provide frequent updates to the business division leaders and STS executives.

• Conduct regular meetings with IT and the business to foster team work, open communication, partnership, and alignment.

• Adhere to industry standards and Scholastic Technology Service Group-defined guidelines and principles for software engineering.



QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

• Key characteristics contributing to the success of the Director include the ability to be flexible, accountable, reliable, industrious, and to build effective teams.

• 10+ years’ e-Commerce application development experience and a strong technical foundation.

• 5+ years’ experience supervising and managing application development teams.

• Proven relationship-building and significant staffing and budgeting experience.

• Be well-versed in the technologies chosen for developing Scholastic’s web application solutions (e.g., J2EE applications, Websphere App Server, WebSphere Commerce, Interwoven TeamSite, GoogleWebToolKit, Endeca Search Engine , Ajax, EJB, Struts, MQ, LDAP, DB2, Oracle, SQL Server database, XML, Web Servicess, MQ, JMS, UNIX/LinuX).

• Expertise in designing and building applications for scalability and redundancy.

• BS degree in Computer Science or related field.
